Stephen Hitchcock manages the direct mail and telephone fundraising program of Bread for the World in Washington, DC. With 70,000 contributing members, the organization receives more than $4 million annually from mailings and phone calls. For more than two decades, most of the time as president, Steve worked for Mal Warwick & Associates, which provides consulting services in fundraising for regional and national nonprofit organizations.
Steve has conducted workshops for both regional and national conferences of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (now the Association of Fundraising Professionals). He has also taught seminars and workshops sponsored by the Public Broadcasting Service, National Public Radio, Trust for Public Land, the American Cancer Society, and Planned Parenthood. For 13 years, Steve organized and led a two-day intensive clinic on major donor fundraising for the clients and special guests of Mal Warwick & Associates.
Mr. Hitchcock’s columns appear regularly in Contributions. He is author of Open Immediately! Straight Talk about Direct Mail Fundraising (Emerson and Church, 2004) and co-author with Mal Warwick of Ten Steps to Fundraising Success (Jossey-Bass, 2002). His analysis and observations have appeared in the blogs, Future Fundraising Now and The Agitator.
He is an honors college graduate of Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana, and received a graduate degree in theology from Christ Seminary (Lutheran), St. Louis, Missouri. He is active in the Association of Lutheran Development Executives, serving on the organization’s education committee.
